The Final Five Countdown #3

Continuing a countdown of the final five six additions to the Hawkgirl/Covergirl Collection. Next up…

Justice League #54A (December 2020) NM $3.99

Since I do not expect to find any more Hawkgirl covers that I have not either already purchased or I cannot afford, what is left are a few recent issues where the Pinioned Princess(es) grace the cover. Justice league #54 is one of them and as I write this, I realize that I should have also included Justice League #53 in this final set. So, I guess that blows my expectations.

Liam Sharp
Xermanico

When I first saw this cover (or was it first, Justice League #53?), I wondered if the character shown was either Keela Roo, the renegade Thangarian who appeared on the cover of Swamp Thing #58 (March 1987) or someone like that. I was fooled by that cover and vowed never to fall for that again. Characters in comic books, cartoons, and comic strips almost always dress the same way throughout the years. This is why superheroes wear costumes. This is why Dagwood and Blondie have dressed the same for nearly 100 years. It is so we the readers will recognize them when we see them. (BTW – Blondie is over 100- years old & she is still a total MILF.)

Chic Young

Yet, I was assured that the winged wonder appearing on the cover of JL #53 and #54 was indeed Hawkgirl when Nightwing referred to his comrade by her secret identity: “Kendra”.

If the scene on the cover appears other-worldly it is because it takes place in the Dark Metalverse and the story told within picks up on a thread that was left hanging at the end of Dark Nights: Metal #3 (December 2017).

On the cover we see Hawkgirl along with Starfire, Nightwing, Cyborg, and Detective Chimp up to their elbows in Starros.

From the solicitation: Written by Joshua Williamson. Art by Xermanico. Cover by Liam Sharp. Doom Metal part two of five storms the stage in this essential Dark Nights: Death Metal tie-in! Its the Titans reunion you’ve been clamoring for when Starfire and Cyborg join Nightwing in this twisted Justice League. The team is hell-bent for Brimstone Bay to free the Legion of Doom, but what horrors and desires will the Valley of Starros reveal to them—and who or what is the villain named Mindhunter? 32 pages, full color. Rated T+ Cover price $3.99. Grade: Near Mint
