Hawkgirl/Covergirl Collection #111

World’s Finest #282 (August 1982) FN $5.40

Cover by Gil Kane

Although World’s Finest #282 marks the end of the Hawkman/Hawkgirl run in this series, it is not the last of the books I need to purchase to collect all of this 21 issue run from #256 to #282. I figure there is about six more to buy. In this issue, Hawkgirl makes her long expected return appearance in the final panels of a story titled “Doctor Katar and Mister Plert” written by Bob Rozakis and drawn by Carmine Infantino. In this story Hawkman encounters a small timid alien by the name of Mr. Plert. This is a creature who Hawkman rescued from space pirates in the previous issue. Now Hawkman and this creature are aboard the Thanagarian’s spaceship as Hawkman continues his search through hyperspace for his missing wife Shayera.

When Hawkman loses his temper with Plert the creature turns on him attacks him and then damages the ship’s hull. Hawkman tries injecting the creature with a strong sedative and when that fails, he tries electrocuting Plert. Finally, the hull breach causes Hawkman and Plert to be forcibly expelled from the ship. Hawkman manages to catch hold of a cable and is thus able to pull himself back inside where he passes out and collapses upon the floor. In the final scene of the story, Katar awakes to find Shayera caring for him she announces that the long-lost armada has returned to Thanagar and that she and Katar are going home “together”.

Art by Carmine Infantino

This is the last appearance of Hawkgirl before the destruction of the multi-verse in Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985). However, a few months earlier the Earth-2 version of Hawkgirl made her debut (return) appearance in All-Star Squadron #6 (February 1982).

Speaking of return appearances, in the latest issue of Hawkman vol 5 (#23 July 2020), Hawkwoman (aka Shayera Hol of Thanagar) appears as a plague doctor in 17th-century Spain.
