Hawkgirl/Covergirl Collection #103

World’s Finest #273 (November 1981) VG $4.49

Cover Art by Ross Andru

You remember in the movie “Mean Girls”; where the Gretchen character played by Lacey Chabert was not going make her favorite catchphrase “fetch” happen no matter how hard she tried? Well, it was kind of like what happened in the early 80s when the editors at DC comics tried to turn Hawkgirl into Hawkwoman. Like “fetch”, it just wasn’t going to happen.

script by Bob Rozakis, pencils by Alex Saviuk, inks by Rodin Rodriguez

Yet, it actual worked out for the best when the name change did not stick because now it has been established that the current reality could support two Hawkgirls – one from the planet Thanagar and in love with Hawkman and the second, an Earth-girl from San Antonio who roots were in Ancient Egypt whose relationship with Hawkman is complicated. The former being known as Hawkwoman and the latter, Hawkgirl. (SPOILER ALERT:) In the most recent issue of the Hawkman series (#19 February 2020), Shayera Thal, the literary descendent of the original Silver-age version of the Hawkgirl Woman character is reintroduced.

And things are still a little complicated…
