Instead of starting off the new year buying new comic books, I am buying some older comics, including a 45-year-old Batman comic for less than what new comic books cost today. Hawkgirl is not featured on the covers of any of the four books that I recently bought, and she appears in only three. Yet it is all good because each one of them plays a part in the history of the Winged Wonder. Next up is…
World’s Finest Comic #267 (March 1981) FN $5.40
Between May 1979 in August 1982, Hawkman and Hawkgirl appeared in approximately 20 issues of the anthology series World’s Finest, a flagship DC comic book born in 1941. Each month the book had anywhere from 4 to 5 stories, one of which always featured Batman and Superman with the rest of the stories featuring well-known superheroes who either currently did not or never had their own series. This is where Hawkman and Hawkgirl along with Green Arrow, Black Canary, Red Tornado and Capt. Marvel (a.k.a. Shazam!) lived in the early 1980s. Although Hawkgirl appears on the cover of only two out of approximately 20 of the books in this run of World’s Finest, I now plan to complete the set.
In issue #267 there were five stories: Batman/Superman, Black Canary, Red Tornado, Hawkman & Hawkgirl, and Captain Marvel. The Hawkman/Hawkgirl story, titled “The Insect Invasion of Midway City”, was part of a long story arc that at one point had Hawkgirl (or rather HawkWOMAN as she was then demanding to be called) leaving Hawkman and returning to Thanagar to join the fight against the tyrant Hyanthis.
In this story, Hawkgirl once again plays the role of the more technically-savvy of the duo as she is shown utilizing Thangarian tech in an effort to defeat an invasion of insect like aliens. This is the beginning of the story-arc involving a villain named Insectus (see World’s Finest #268 and World’s Finest #269).
