Although I am a fanatic about comic books, I am not a big fan of live-action series or movies based on comic books. Yet, when I heard that this season’s Arrowverse-crossover on the CW will be based on the epic comic book miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths, I decided that I wanted to catch up on episodes of Supergirl, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and etc. leading up to when the special airs in December. I started with Supergirl season five episode one.
In this episode, Supergirl’s supposedly indestructible cape is damaged during a battle with a shape shifting monster. Brainiac 5 takes her cape telling her that he will fix it. As it turns out he not only fixed her cape, but he created a new uniform for her that appears whenever she whips off her glasses. When the time comes for the big reveal, we hear Supergirl exclaim gleefully “Pants!” Supergirl’s new uniform which no longer includes a miniskirt and boots makes her look like one of “The Boys”. She absolutely could be the Homelander’s twin sister.
That is not the only new look for the TV version of Supergirl, as she is now wearing bangs à la Taylor Swift.
I am a traditionalist who believes that comic book characters should maintain the same look over time; changing only if the look becomes outdated (Black Canary), the old-look comes back in style (Black Canary), they grow-up (Dick Grayson became Nightwing) or they gain new powers (Hawkgirl in the current run of Justice League).
This is not the first time I have seen Supergirl in pants. In fact, one of the comic books in my Hawkgirl/Covergirl collection is Adventure Comics #413 (December 1971), where she is seen wearing two different non-traditional looks.
The COIE crossover on the CW will begin with Supergirl on December 8, 2019.
